A Lesson From the Birds

Allison and I have been leading somewhat of a vagabond life for the past few months. She was laid off from work, our lease was up, and we chose to come down and live on the west side of Florida.

We lived in North Naples Florida for four weeks. It rained and stormed for most of our first week here.

On the 5th day we noticed a tiny hatchling bird on the ground underneath a tree. Looking up we saw a nest that had been turned over. Allison and I, along with her Mother and Aunt who were in town, collectively figured out a way to get the baby bird back into the nest and did our best to secure both the structure and the hatchling.

The next day I noticed the tiny chick on the ground again, this time there was no saving it. We observed what we assumed to be the mother and father overlooking what was once their home and offspring. It saddened me to think how cruel Mother Nature can be, and that we couldn’t do anything to help.

On our last day in Naples, I went outside for my morning meditation. I noticed something on the ground. An empty shell. I looked up and saw another nest in the tree. It appears that within three weeks the two adult birds had rebuilt, restructured, and brought another hatchling into the world.

A Bird’s Life

Animals are created to adapt, overcome, and carry on.

And so are we.

Whatever these storms have brought to your nest, I pray we can all take a lesson from the birds.
