Change is a Choice: Pivot Points Help You Choose Powerfully

Change is a choice. A pivot point is the moment in which you choose one action instead of another. At times it may not even feel like a choice. But the more you pay attention to your personal pivot points the more often you will tend to choose powerfully.

TripodWe have pivot points in our:

  • commitments. Let’s say you have a commitment to exercise, or lead generate, or some other activity today. And you don’t feel like it, you don’t want to, you’re thinking of all the reasons not to. You almost let yourself off the hook but you do it anyway. Or the flip side, you may cave into your excuses and you let yourself off the hook. That’s a pivot point.
  • external tendencies. Let’s say you have a tendency to lash out in anger, sleep late, or overeat. That moment in which you are actually aware of the possibility of calming yourself, or getting up, or putting down the the doughnut and walking away… is a pivot point.
  • internal tendencies: Do  you tend to feel anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated, depressed or any other dis-empowering emotion? Can you think of a time when you were able to shift from this feeling to one of confidence, peace, or some other positive emotion? The moment of shift is a pivot point.

Similar to filters, pivot points can impact our lives without our conscious awareness. To create positive change in your life become more aware of the key pivot points in your life. Notice when and how you go in one direction or another.

When you get to a fork in the road, take it. –Yogi Berra

Change your focus:

  1. Recall a specific pivot point in your life. What happened exactly?
  2. Where do you tend to pivot in a direction you don’t want to go?
  3. How can you become more aware of your pivot points?
