Change is a choice. You can change your life by changing your filter.
Have you ever held a film camera from the 1940s, similar to the one in the video above? Back then cameras were equipped with screens of dyed gelatin or glass for affecting color or the degree of light. The one I am holding has filters labeled bright sun, hazy, and cloudy, among others. We now filter video and photos electronically before we take the photo and after through a variety of apps. Filters alter our perception of reality by blocking certain aspects of it. Basically, they keep some stuff in and other stuff out.
Are you on Instagram? Undoubtedly you have seen the effects of various filters on the original image. These filters at times dramatically change the original into something surreal and even distorted. Filters include vintage, Nashville, perpetua, and rise, just to name a few.
You and I have filters for every aspect of our lives, including (but not limited to) our:
- work
- family
- responsibilities
- finances
- health
- relationships
The way we shift and change our reality through filters is for more complex and convoluted than the photo app on our smartphone. There are three primary filters, each with many varieties:
- How we view the world
- What we consistently say to ourselves
- How we feel
What there is to do is to be aware of the filter you tend to utilize. If you are not having the experience of life you really want, change the filter.
If you haven’t yet done so, watch the brief video above and consider these questions:
- What filters have you applied to the significant areas of your life?
- Pick two filters: how have they affected your life?
- How can you change the filter to change your experience of life?
Change is a choice. Your filter is a choice. Choose powerfully.
