FORM can be defined as “the proper method.” I’d like to offer another definition:
FOCUSED, OPTIMAL, REPETITIVE MOTION
It’s one of the most important elements in athletic development, physical transformation and winning in competition. Improper form can lead to unnecessary fatigue, burnout and injury. As a result it can rob the energy needed for proper form. And worst of all it’s less than ideal in creating the desired outcome.
Similarly, in business and in life FORM is critical to reaching your personal and professional objectives. Very simply you will never actualize your potential without it.
Breaking down FORM
F = FOCUS. Proper form starts with FOCUS. What do you intend to create, produce, or accomplish? What do you want more or less of? (see MORE LESS Goal Method). FOCUS on the ideal vision, result, and/or experience.
ORM = OPTIMAL, REPETITIVE MOTION
- O = OPTIMAL. When this is clear your OPTIMAL REPETITIVE MOTION will become clear. You can be focused and still perform less than optimally. Have you ever seen a linebacker try to drive a golf ball with improper form? He may be focused, driven, and have the heart of a champion. But he may grip the club too hard, flex his body as if on the goal line, and swing with all of his focused might. As a result the ball may go straight into the rough. Meanwhile the kid half his size (with optimal form) drives it straight down the fairway. My good friend and golf pro Brett describes this as:
Effortless power versus powerless effort.
Brett Gorney
- R = REPETITIVE. It’s not enough to perform the motions every once in awhile, even if performed optimally. Consistency is key.
- M = MOTION. This is the specific, duplicable, action that you have optimized. When you put all of this all together,
FOCUSED OPTIMAL REPETITIVE MOTION automatically moves you toward success and achievement in any chosen endeavor.
Dialing It In
Here are a few areas where FORM can powerfully and positively impact your life:
- Lead Generation and business development
- Health and Fitness
- Mental and emotional well-being
- Spiritual Enlightenment
- Planning and preparation
- Study
- Public speaking
Questions for reflection and ACTION:
- How’s your FOCUS? Do you have a clear vision? What do you intend to become, accomplish, or experience? How can you sharpen your FOCUS?
- What are the MOTIONs (disciplines, practices, activities etc.) that create conditions favorable for realizing this vision?
- How can you shift toward the OPTIMAL standard for each motion? Where are the incongruencies with your FOCUS? Think effortless power versus powerless effort.
- Where do you need to be more REPETITIVE with your motions?
- Finally, what resources can you access for support in adjusting your FORM? Think research, trainers, personal growth coaches, experts, seminars/conferences, masterminds, advisory groups…
You can choose to dial in FORM for just about anything you intend to achieve or accomplish. Choose powerfully.
